Yeah, I think splitting is the best method. I may run it through a modern compressor as well, just to see what happens.
I know the guy still has the tape, but it's 20 years old at this point. I don't know that anyone has a working VCR at this point where I could re-capture and re-encode. Unless I can get to allocate some special space for it...
