It's already quite compressed. I started with a few hundred GB and got it down that far. With the tools of the time, going lower was not an option.
You could split it up too. Also tmp.ninja is a good anonymous temp file host if you ever want to send it.
Yeah, I think splitting is the best method. I may run it through a modern compressor as well, just to see what happens.
I know the guy still has the tape, but it's 20 years old at this point. I don't know that anyone has a working VCR at this point where I could re-capture and re-encode. Unless I can get to allocate some special space for it...
