Hard physical work and a little distortion from the camera. My hands got thick when I was young working construction. He's had a lifetime of it.

Why does a man like him even need sunglasses? Shouldn't his eyes be acclimated to a little sun from being outside so much with horses?
Too much UV exposure over a lifetime causes cataracts, blue eyed people are even more sensitive to UV. Being a mountain man, his fashion sense may lag his survival skills, and I am of the impression that he really doesn't give a f*ck what others think anyway.

I wouldn't expect him to care what anyone else thinks, but that doesn't change the fact that I can't take him seriously.
The frontier can be like visiting a foreign country that has citizens who still wear traditional (to them) clothing.
