I do have a couple of systems with Cinnamon installed on them, I could give this a whirl and see how it goes.

It used to work pretty well. So well to the point many, many, years ago I was using vbox with hardware accelerated graphics to game on (some games worked fine, stuff like FPS did not, too much added latency/processing at the time). It should be just fine for most things.
