We had Google Glasses, the Metaverse, Apple Vision Pro. Now Meta is making another try.

This article barely acknowledges those other failures. Meta claims this new attempt will succeed where the others failed because you can talk to it. Imagine being out in public dictating your text messages out loud, or incessantly saying “scroll down” as you flip through app feeds.

Aside from looking like an idiot, audio commands are still slow and error prone. That part hasn’t changed with AI. Most people will use their phone’s touch screen to control it.

That leaves a few advantages like playing videos off to the side of your field of view, or 3D map overlays (which they mentioned). Maybe you can flip through your app feeds with your thumb while looking forward. The phone addicts will like that, but I don’t think most people will bother. It’s neat, but not worth the hundreds of dollars and hassle of dealing with another device.

Just like Google Glass and the others most states will prohibit you from using these things while driving, which would have been the biggest reason to buy it for drivers.

We don’t need an immersive environment with junk being displayed in our field of view. Most people are realizing they need to dial down the distractions and notifications, not add more.
