The idea sounds very interesting but I really wonder how efficient it would be and how durable it would be. Could work for a purpose built storage solution but using it in something like a house seems like a stretch.

Oh sure, that's a good idea. Build a massive energy source into the foundation of your home; what could go wrong? It's not like batteries can short-circuit and explode or anything...

Right? What happens if there is a flood or a lightening strike? Does the entire neighborhood just get electrocuted? Does the foundation explode from the inside out? Does it somehow contain the energy and then back-feed it into the grid and blow things out? Do you go into your basement, step on the floor and just die because the charge is too high and the insulation failed?

Turn that supercapacitor into a flux capacitor.
