My broke ass can't afford anything higher than 75Hz but, even that is a good help on eye strain.
Though I'd love to have one, I don't see much benefit for anything above 120/144Hz unless you play games competitively.
I keep thinking about all the hardware required to increase frame rates refresh rates. There's a point of diminishing returns. I'd say you're right on about 120/144 Hz.
Good news is that prices have come down quite a bit for decent monitors that are 100-144Hz. As a side note, as much as I hate reddit, one of the very few subreddits that's worth a shit is the buildapcsales one, as it's a good place to find deals on PC parts on accessories. You can always check out that place for monitor sales and such if you ever feel the itch to upgrade.
