Maybe I've just been around too long but aren't projects like this just pure tedium? You can do almost anything with anything today, so it's never a question of whether it's technically possible. It always comes down to fighting with the OS to get control of the hardware so you can make it do what you want. One reason things like Arduino are so fun because it's all pretty much bare-metal and you can just write driver routines for whatever you hook up.
