TLDR; 'Smart TV' does stupid things, ends up DOSing local network machines.

From the post:

>Any reader who has bought a TV in recent years will know that it’s now almost impossible to buy one that’s just a TV. Instead they are all “smart” TVs, with an on-board computer running a custom OS with a pile of streaming apps installed. It fits an age in which linear broadcast TV is looking increasingly archaic, but it brings with it a host of new challenges.

I hate "smart TVs". Rather buy a PC monitor, most of those don't have Ethernet or wifi built-in.

Yeah, I think they only way to get a "not smart" tv is to pay a massive premium. The only time I connect a TV to the internet now is right out of the box to run a software update then I factory reset it and use a PC connected to it for all of my media/streaming.

If you must have one of these surveillance devices in your home, at least plug it in to a switched power strip so you can shut it down completely when you're not using it.
