Well, I know someone who bought one new, it did something catastrophic before 10k (can't remember) and he was given a new one. Know someone who had an engine die around 100k to the point of replacement. Neighbors across the street had two, both have had electrical gremlins and one they tried to pull the transmission to fix in the middle of the street. My brother (the mechanic of the family) talks about how certain models will self-destruct because of engine oiling issues and how Hyundai likes to buy up all used engines of that type for repair, A FOAF that works in used (junkyard) parts says they can't keep drivetrains in stock for Hyundai because they're constantly failing and dealers are trying to repair ones that aren't that old.

It's not relegated to Hyundai. It's Korean cars in general. Hyundai, Kia, and on the rare chance you see one, Daewoo. The kimchi niggers just can't make a drive train that is worth two fucks, and I don't know why. They literally have Japan as a template. They're VERY plush cars inside while they run, but outside of a few other brands (like Jeep), they're guaranteed to need major repair no matter the model you buy

Kia and Hyundai are both the same parent, so no surprises there. Have not seen a Daewoo for years, they of course didn't last long past their final sales dates. What was that, 1998, 99?

It's similar to Isuzu. They're huge in their home country, but couldn't make it out because the cars were made like shit. Hyundai and Kia got big because it was right place at right time situation. Early 2000s, cars were too expensive, so they filled the niche of sub-10k cars. Similar to Nissan and Mitsubishi. But now, 20 years on, people know they're made of crap, so people who DON'T know like them cause they're plush, and those who DO know buy better cars.
