Happened to routers with update disabled.
As routers automatically updated and fetched the corrupted definition file, they started running out of filesystem space and memory and crashing.
So, I’m just politely Calling BS on anyone who claimed what you state.

The functionality of the security feature in question uses automatic updates. Simply because automatic firmware updates are disabled, it does not imply that automatic updates for the rest of the device are disabled as well.
