I had a friend who lived on a farm with one of these smack bang in the middle of a field, about 200 metres from the house. I could not sleep there... It was insanely loud - and not just a loud noise - but loud on a physical level. You can FEEL those things at close range.

Infrasound is dangerous. One interesting effect is from sounds below the human hearing range, 0~16 Hz. The "magic note" of 8 Hz is known to cause involuntary evacuation of the bowels. This was discovered in the 19th century when the 64-foot pipe was installed on a pipe organ in Berlin and when the "Gravissima" note was played during the first rehearsal of "Night on Bald Mountain" the sound caused musicians to immediately lose control of their bowels and involuntarily defecate.
