funny, you may not have it yet in your area but we have monitored water meters with what i believe to be "ZIGBEE" tech and received multiple letters from the water company during the summer about "continuous water usage" hehe, they said to check for leaks! Well i was using a swamp cooler and water misters for the shop and chickens! A very small amount of water was triggering those letters! probably 5gph , so they are already using this information for spurious reasons, obviously it would be easy to crunch the numbers to find out things like "miss zombi is doing the laundry, the LG refrigerator is making ice cubes, Zombi is taking an unusually long shower today" hehe its that easy.
I refused all smart meters, and, so far, not being charged for that "privilege".

Have you seen the water flow restrictor valves they're attaching to "violator's" lines in CA? Like a 1/8" opening - unbelievable!

100% - they know what we're doing by the usage, and people are vastly underestimating the implications of this.
to "circle back" the unspoken part is that these meters have very low power and the radio tower is 1/4 mile away. That means they are all passing the information from meter to meter until i gets to the cell site, gotta go, my phone just told me my toast is done!
