would a vpn hamper the data collection?

This is basically a super cookie. It monitors the websites you visit, the time you use your device, the location you are at, and the apps you install/use.

A normal Internet connection works like so: Your computer -> destination (ISP provides entire route, ISP can see everything)

A VPN on a computer works something like this: Your computer -> VPN provider -> your traffic. (Because your entire Internet connection goes to VPN, your ISP only sees ISP -> VPN, not your traffic)

A phone uses multiple streams of data for multiple forms of handshake (voice, data, etc). Carrier services communicate significantly more telemetry data (data is the new oil, and they sell your shit constantly + government demands spying backdoors). Ostensibly, a VPN on your phone may obfuscate SOME traffic (third party browsers), but anything driven by an app will still be visible to the wireless carrier.

TL:DR: Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but a VPN is pointless on a phone unless it's rooted.

thanks. apps can rarely be trusted. sounds like using a privacy respecting browser and vpn in place of an app will obfuscate mobile traffic to a degree.

Third party browser + VPN will help, but won't cover 100%.

MyVerizon sent me to a third-party Privacy Dashboard. It only shows bogus info I gave them when I signed up years ago. Only the phone number is valid. People tell me that, even if I am in their Contacts, my ID shows as "Unknown" when I call them. I refuse to use the Verizon App. My phone is too antiquated for it to work anyway. Sometimes older tech is more private. I will get an /e/ cell phone when they are in stock, which bypasses the Google Android operating system. Also, APK Pure is a wonderful alternative to Google's Play Store, and fully has all the same functionality. Just less spying.

Thanks did that. There's also a setting in the Verizon manage settings to block auto enrollment into these "services". I clicked block for that too. Not sure how much it will help but every little bit helps.

My cynical guess is they will still collect it and build a profile for each of their users regardless of that setting. Just that they won't tell you that they're using it behind the scenes and you won't receive the text messages with their offers unless you haven't turned it off. But if you had it turned off and them sometime in the future turn it back on, they'd have all your "offers" ready to go and the flip of a switch because they've been collecting it the entire time.

Interesting - but doesn't surprise me. US Cellular carriers treat pre-paid like zoo animals.
