The problem is they use generic terms like "we can change these terms at any time" and "we have the right to sell our (your) data to 3rd parties."

Anyone who has, it is their fault if the company uses their data for research they did not want to be part of. There's literally no excuse to skip the 3-5 page terms of service agreements if they are concerned about their privacy.
