The argument is that a coal plant is more efficient than a small engine in a car (power distribution is surprisingly efficient). Also electric gives flexibility in source of power. If one has solar panels at home, then it's pretty off-grid. You could have an electric vehicle for your house in the middle of nowhere. I think that the weight of batteries is the biggest problem. That must impact efficiency significantly, carrying around so much dead weight.
