Most cars have CAN Bus come out the OBD-II port. What you can do depends on the widgets hanging off of it. Typically, it's a lot. You can buy an interface for your laptop that will talk on the CAN bus via OBD-II port so you don't have to do any gnarly wiring yourself.

I've been wanting to play around with the MCP2515, it'll do CAN over SPI, and they're only a few bucks. I've heard you can practically drive the car if it's a recent model.
