Shocker, your cell carrier knows pretty much exactly where you are.
Google isn't a phone carrier, that's the problem here
It was more an analogy that if you're using a cellphone, someone on the other end knows where you are.
Google just got caught exploiting it.
They got caught exploiting it without users consent, they got caught installing it, a spyware, without users consent, en masse, and there's no way to remove it, by design
Nobody is allowed do that via the appstore except google. It's bordering on abuse of dominant position.
Also not new to smartphones or even GPS. They knew what tower you were connecting to, in fact the sms texts were merely riding on the back of the check-in to tower that the phones were doing all along to maintain your active service connection to the carrier. So yeah they have always known your approximate location.
