They've been making alarm clocks like this for years. I'm guessing it's all just thin shaved wood or some fake composite w/ a sensitive touch screen slammed up against it.

For a thousand bucks it better be solid wood with a thin LCD display attached. I wouldn't pay more than ten dollars for a veneer version. ₜᵢₘₘᵧ
