Seriously my 2070 is more than good enough. I got a 18% frame rate bump from upgrading my CPU which is actually in stock and not price gouged. To get a similar bump from a graphics card I would have had to spend an extra $1,000. Instead for $450 I got an 8 core processor that smashes my old 6 core to dust.

Fuck graphics cards, fuck ethereum, fuck the fbi, and fuck the jews.

So... you have a pretty decent GPU and you're asking why have one?

[–] 10 pts

lol... right? I'm not getting this.

I like the fuck the FBI and Jews part tho.

[–] 4 pts

Pretty much. He's not considering people who decided to skip a generation or two.

You can't even get a 1050 Ti for less than $400 now.

[–] 2 pts

I got a 3080. It's sweeet.

[–] 13 pts

my 2070

I don't think you're aware of what's going on, 5 year old cards are sold above their release msrp.

[–] 4 pts

All I'm looking for is a GTX 1660 (I would also take a 1060) for my nephew and I'm seeing prices in the $800 range. When OP is running a GTX 460 like I am, then maybe he can talk.

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

You can thank crypto mining for that.

[–] 2 pts

Someone's them. I just can't find one for MSRP anywhere right now.

Even if miners didn't exist there would still be a shortage and gamers who get pissed about miners are faggots who need to grow up anyway

[–] 1 pt

Seriously? I bought a pre-built computer for the living-room, last year, with a 1660 in it for like, $1000 total. Maybe it might be worth it to buy pre-builts, salvage the cards, and re-sell the superfluous parts.

[–] 1 pt

The pre-built still have access to good cards. I've seen complete Dell gaming rigs with something like a RTX 3080 for cheaper than a good quality RTX 3080 sells for by itself right now. For now, it's still worth waiting. I can't believe they are going to stay this pricey too much longer.

[–] 0 pt

Pre builts are already gone.

[–] 1 pt

I'll sell you a 1080 for 300

[–] 1 pt

Silly. They're going for close to $1K used right now.

[–] 0 pt

Given that a 3060 is supposed to retail around $300, I think I just wait. Would you take $200?

[–] 5 pts

Fuck graphics cards, fuck ethereum, fuck the fbi, and fuck the jews.

That escalated quickly.

[–] 4 pts

The only things you'd need a high end graphics card for are AAA games. Considering the only one worth a damn is Doom, there's no reason to get another one.

[–] 2 pts

Get into 3d design. Render out 3 minutes of video, 4k tiff images, with 20+ sources of light, high quality shadows, particle fx, materials to the sky, high vert counts, massive AA sampling, massive spec sampling, so on. 3 min = 180 sec = 5394.6 frames (at 29.97 NTSC standard) = 1618380 sec (at 5 min per rendered frame) = 26973 min = 449.55 hours = 18.73125 days of render time. Granted, 5 min per frame is really high, but you can see how things can escalate quickly. Thats assuming nothing crashes, and you don't even look at the computer. I would transition for a double stack of 2070, 64 memory and a 16 core.

Half-Life Alyx and Metro Exodus were both pretty cool imo.

I usually am playing Minecraft or CS:GO tho tbh.

You don't need a good graphics card for any of those. I just got the Acer Nitro 5 laptop with the GTX 1650 and it plays everything up to 2019 or so on ultra around 60 fps. $150 card for desktops.

I need one for VR and another for accelerated video encoding. Guess I'll have to wait a couple of years...

Are GPUs in such short supply because everybody and his brother is trying to mine shitloads of cryptocurrency before the US dollar goes Weimar?

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

No, they are in short supply because there's too many chips to produce and not enough fabs or materials. Almost everyone is having their chips made by TSMC and that's really putting a squeeze on production. The new consoles coming out seems to have fucked up the supply of everything else produced by TSMC more than anything. Thanks to Apple, no one else can even produce anything on TSMC 5nm right now and the consoles are taking up most of the 7nm production.

Nvidia's chips are produced by Samsung but they don't have anywhere near the production capabilities of TSMC and then you've still got the material shortages going on.

[–] 2 pts

I was not aware AMD's cards were made by TSMC; I would have thought they would go with GlobalFoundries. Looks like they've been relying entirely on TSMC for RDNA1 and later.

Funny how "our" politicians don't seem to be the least bit concerned about all our chips being made by one company.

Global foundries is way behind everyone else in fab tech. I think they're at 14nm and TSMC is about to launch their 3nm production. AMD still uses them for the memory controller on their CPUs but that's it and hopefully Zen 4 will change that because their memory controllers kind of suck. My first 5800X had the memory controller die and take out the whole CPU after a month. On my second 5800X now.

Radeon RX570 here. Combined with my Ryzen 7 1700x, there's not much I am missing.

Sure, some games don't do 120Hz @ 4K, but who cares. 1080p and 60Hz is enough.

[–] 2 pts

The graphics card isn't always the bottle neck, especially if the other parts of your computer aren't top of the line. A game life Factorio the GPU is almost never going to be your bottle neck. With a FPS like DOOM your card will allow you to run the game with max settings smoothly. However a game like 7 days to die, despite being very FPS like much of the lag is coming from enemy AI which is not GPU related.

[–] 2 pts

At this point I think we should all be preparing for much more serious things than games

[–] 2 pts

It's bragging rights. My graphics card can render more triangles per second than your graphics card.

Mine renders 6 gazillion triangles per second. LOL.

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

Oh yeah? Mine will play Call of World of Theft at 3,000 fps!

[–] 1 pt

My card makes $5/day in ethereum.

[–] 5 pts

How's your electric bill?

[–] 0 pt

Bro that's dumb. Just put your money in a liquidity pool on defi or anchor. That'll get you at least 350% apy
