I think you are right. They simply rely on fear of authority and our lack of a sense of unification as the people who keep the house warm and keep food on the table. The entire financial market has been made to seem so convoluted and esoteric as a means of intimidating a lot of people from understanding the basics. Like with so many things, we leave it to the experts, and when the TV tells us such and such, we go, "Ah, well that must be the case. It's all so beyond me."
