I get the feeling that this technology wasn't intended to be useful in itself, but a step to better or different battery technologies.

I think mainly the chemistry, zinc-air seemed to have panned our only for hearing aids, would be cool if it had other apps

Ok, yes. It does have limited application right now. No reason why it can't be explored for other uses.
