They don't need to be safer at all. They'll be pushed into place because the concept of controlling the movement and life of every person is irresistible to the psychopaths that rise to power.
Is someone being an annoyance setting up a free speech website? Just have their "self-driving" car make a "tragic mistake", or simply deliver them to a black prison when they think they are going out for smokes.
Is there a protest/demonstration/civil unrest? Cars will be programmed to avoid the area.
The slippery slope is real, and when you put tools in place that can be used for controlling you, that's exactly what they'll be used for.

Oh no let me be clear, I will never have a self driving car as I am a good driver. For reasons too long winded to get into here, however I understand the concept you are speaking too and I’ll not be a part of it however the average person will, many many people will like the appeal of going where they want to go with zero effort. However here I am in current year and I still refuse to drive an automatic transmission much less a self driving car. Stick shift ftw

I'm not even cool with other people having self driving cars, of im driving my old car and they cant crash my car to stop or kill me, they can just have someone elses self driving car hit me head on at full speed. Sure they could just drive a car into me right now, but with self driving cars it could be any car anywhere any time

Apparently, Apple needs tech to warn drivers coming up on them from behind. Not all self driving tech is the same. Waymo is far more advanced that the other companies working on it. In May 2018 . They have a loong way to go.
