Yeah it all depends on the use case. You should be able to do it with a razor blade instead of the custom block, just gotta take it slow, cut into under the heatspread, and be steady. Did it with my i7-7700k without issue, with great results.
The temp drops seem worth it if you are doing a lot of heavy workloads or gaming though, almost 10*C with an overclock.
