If you really want a copy of someone's research, you can usually email them at their listed email address - using their institutional email.

The reasons to do so are many, but they're usually willing to send it.

What makes it into the journals is only a small part of their research. It's edited for size and printing and it doesn't have their actual data (usually). Instead, it has their conclusions and methodology. If you contact them, they'll often send you all of the data at once. They most likely will, if you ask specifically for it.

Obviously, I'm a huge fan of open access - but journals and peer review still have a place. Until things catch up, it's probably in your best interest to email the PI and just ask for a copy by email or by regular post (offer to pay for shipping, of course). If the PI is not available, or at the same institution, you can contact other authors or just contact the department head. The department head probably won't get you the complete research, however.
