There's whole companies out there which produce nothing. They just sit on dodgy patents and charge licencing fees which are always slightly lower than the cost of contesting them in court. One company claimed they had invented "e-commerce" and started shaking down hundreds of small businesses selling things online. Eventually one of them fought back and the company shut down, not before it had made it's staff/owners hundreds of thousands of dollars of course.
