We are on septic but don't have a reserve of non potable. We do however have a pond, so if necessary I could fill up a 5 gal bucket and that would keep the throne flushing. I have also hand pumped well water into a bucket for flushing in some past power outages.
Well the pond is non potable until filtered anyway. Water will be the biggest problem here. And non food grade containers are cheaper so I have some of them just for flushing. Of course if I really needed them as a last resort I would drink it filtered but chemicals dont usually filter out.
We got a hand pump installed in the well feeding our house a few years ago. Losing power is a regular thing for us and no water is no bueno. For temporary water storage we got a few used 60 gal barrels from the Vlasic pickle factory in Imlay City. Worker dude sells them out of the parking lot for $35 cash each. Food grade plastic, extra heavy duty. How much water do you plan to store?
well(:)) ya see around here wells are to deep to hand pump. 500 ft plus. thats why the whole garden thing isnt viable here. I guess thats an advantage to being older. As much as I can. There are ponds (cow tanks) here I am confident I can filter out of with what I have. But I prefer to have potable treated water stored.
