It's a good thing electronics replaced mechanics for TV on both ends. Imagine what a "widescreen" high resolution TV and camera would look like if we stayed on the mechanical system. The pinhole disc would be huge and it would spin at dangerous speeds. Your TV could destroy your home if it went a little off-balance and the disc wobbled violently. That would be quite a sight to see!
Like a flywheel on a dragster, cuts through the wall and the car and into the neighbors house.
Read about these monstrosities in the book "Wunder der Wellen" (Miracles of Waves) by Eduard Rhein, when I was but a wee lad. The scanning disks were called "Nipkow-Scheibe".
