A lot of the older stuff is losing value as newer devices come on the market that can run rings around the old stuff. 10 bills will outfit your test bench with equipment people from even the 1990s could only dream of. A big problem is the stuff is just old and worn out, and there are no new parts.

Even the giant Tektronix is said to be hanging on only because the government has to buy US made stuff. But at $300 for a good scope from Rigol vs. the exact same feature set from Tek @ 10,000...yeah.

I love all that old stuff, I used to have a bunch of it just looking cool on the shelf...but in practice I use a $20 multimeter for everything. It's not like I repair hi-fi equipment either, just guitars/cars/appliances etc. As you said, the new stuff blows the old stuff out of the water.
