Same reason you plug a old console or w/e into a modern TV and it looks like digested dog shit, low quality scaling for cvbs and svhs/svideo.

How the fuck are you going to burn DVDs on a regular CD-ROM drive?! I guess this thing had a DVD burner in it as well? It must have cost a fortune when it was new!

HA! yeah that caught my eye as well. I suppose the software could make VCDs or something so that was the minimum. Ah VCD, the best way to get 2 dollar currently playing in theater movies from a guy on the street with a table setup only to get it home and realize it is a shit VHS camcorder capture.... Those weren't the days.
