True, but that was still the time that we were happily paying that much for a game.
It was when low-rent companies like Froggo started pushing shit on us that it really crashed hard. ET and Pac-Man didn't help.
Unfortunately, no killer app on Switch is going to make this next gen a tough sell outside of the fanboys.

Switch’s launch with Breath of the Wild made a huge difference. The idea of something so expansive yet built so “Nintendo simple” was perfect.
Mario Kart is a party game. Yes, it’s a sequel to the number one seller on the Switch, but the Switch version achieved those numbers because it was a longstanding pack in title on the system.
Then, the one thing people would want from a Switch2 with backward compatibility, improved performance on the original Switch titles, won’t happen either because the hardware is not directly compatible. This means they’re running (very likely “borrowed”) emulators to play Switch games on the Switch2, so there won’t be any performance enhancement.
Can’t wait to learn that Switch joycons and controllers don’t work with the Switch2. Or even better that you’ll have to have original joycons to play Switch games on the Switch2.
Nintendo looks as though they’re on track to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, yet again.
They had a lot of goodwill and inertia. Doesn't take much to destroy either.
Not saying it’s “Wii U” all over again. It’ll likely be more like N64. Lucky for them, every console sucks right now.
Mario Kart as a release title is a prime example how out of touch Nintendo is at the moment. It's basically their biggest seller that's always on the charts in some capacity. It makes complete sense from a business perspective.
But, most of the people who buy early are the hardcore fans. The ones who bought Wii U and ended up seeing lot of Wii U ports on Switch. And they were stuck with Mario Kart 8, then Mario Kart 8 for two generations. Mario Kart 8 released in 2014. That's over 11 years of the same Mario Kart game. And the launch title is Mario Kart? People have had enough of Mario Kart even if the new one has some open world thing going on. It's probably the most anti-climactic announcement they could have made for people who had a Wii U.
Yep. Mario Kart is a perfect Christmas 2025 release. You launch strong with a solid platformer, an immersive adventure, or a long demanded classic brand revival.
Better choices:
- Kid Icarus Mists of Mythology (a speculative open world Kid Icarus game)
- Metroid Prime 4
- Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (should have waited and polished since the game ran like ass on the Switch)
- F-Zero Unlimited (a speculative F-Zero racer that would look and run amazing, showcasing the system’s performance)
- Punch Out World Tour (a speculative Punch Out with career mode or even cartoonish mini games where Little Mac has to run errands for Doc Louis at the start of his career to learn basic skills)
- Super Mario Galaxy 3 (a speculative sequel for the series)
