Today is going to be a slightly different review. Today I'm going to review manga that I don't recommend. But let me predicate that by saying it's not BAD, I just can't recommend it.

Whenever you read articles about Top Manga/Anime in Japan, almost every single one will have Lucky Star near the top of the list, if not at number one. However, American choice lists almost never include it. Why is that? On paper, the manga sounds interesting. High School Slice of life Comedy. Main characters are a diverse bunch, from the sporty otaku, to the goody goody Moe star student, to the polar opposite twins. But when you dive in, you instantly notice that the manga just seems...flat.

The reason for this is very much cultural.

This is a manga of pop culture, and everyday cultural references. From places, to products, to jokes, to even something as simple as how you eat certain foods, this is very much a product by Japanese, for Japanese. I like to think I'm pretty well soaked in Japanese culture, but this manga simply doesn't fly for me. As I said before, IT'S NOT BAD. It has strong moments of cuteness or humor, but ultimately it's something you'd need to have grown up and lived to fully appreciate. It's like trying to explain KTLA 5 Sunday movies during the 80s to someone who wasn't from Los Angeles. You can explain all day but they'll never fully appreciate what it was.

If you're looking to see what all the Nipon fuss is about, go ahead and give this pulp a read. Just don't be surprised if your left scratching your head at times.
