I think it was it chickpeas that tends to put nitrogen into the soil? I vaguely remember my Dad telling me about them ~50 years ago.
I've got my Dad's old garden area (~75' x 75') with most of a foot of rich loam but a couple monster pine trees grew bigger over the last 40 years and have shaded out a good part of it. I hate to take those trees down but if I ever intend to have a fantastic garden again, they will need to go. Sad, they have been there all of my life and were right in the back yard near the little chicken house. Kind of like taking down old historic monuments. I've been dragging my feet on taking them down.
Wow, that's a big garden! With the chicken house and all, sounds like you have some nice property.
I can sympathize with the tree removal. I have a 50+' maple that has a triple split trunk about 3' from the ground. Had a tree company out here maybe a decade ago. They trimmed off a lot of branches to reduce the weight and put some foam in where the trunks merge to try and stop water going in but, I think it was already too late to help much.
Sorry for the dark pic, it's a crappy day. I know it has to come down, Lord willing before it cracks and falls. Got one trunk for my house and one for each of the neighbor's. Breaks my heart to think of taking it down, it's the only tree I have in my yard, but after looking at it for almost 30 years, it's now starting to really terrify me.
I wonder if attaching them together with a chain at about 30' up would save them for another 30 years?
My folks lot (house I live in now) is 1.7ac. I've got a 30x50 cabinet maker's shop and the 6'x8' chicken house for outbuildings. I still haven't sold my old house, still trying to move my stuff here to empty it in preparation of selling it, but I need to weed out more crap here to make room for my crap from there. I would like to sell my old house this year.
Good luck with the house and the weeding out of crap, something I sorely need to do. Garage is full of stuff from 15 yrs in apt., and 30 of living here. Then I have a lot of things from my parents' house after Mom passed in 2013, also paying for a storage unit full of stuff that I couldn't fit. Still had to walk away from most of it in the end. Hope the flipper who bought it salvaged all the good stuff I left behind.
Now that I think of it, the tree guy did mention about the chain thing. Didn't do it at the time as we were low on funds. I'll have to look into doing it now. Thanks for the reminder!
BTW, my 1/3 acre envies your almost 2. 😢
