My experiance - healthy / healthy looking vegans are ex meat eaters who recently gave it up.
The real long term vegan are sickly looking. I know a pair of 50 year old twins where one is a beer drinking meat eating looks 35, while his brother is a vegan and looks like a 60 year old ex cancer patient.

I found most I'm a vegan and I'm loving it are <1year into it.
Always exceptions though, that's just my personal experiance.
