I am recently a bee keeper but studied them for a few years now. Very interesting bugs. In the winter they kick out all the drones who then die. Keepers often try to reduce the amount of drones in a hive but the bees will keep making drones anyway.

The hive as a whole is a reproductive unit. The drones, while they may look like independent life forms, are merely parts of one organism. This is why they are successful. The drones don't need to worry about reproduction and can focus entirely on their task, whether it is guarding the hive or collecting nectar.
