What is considered a "starter" home today, was considered a #$@%$@% mansion 50 years ago. We had a realtor describe our 4 bedroom home as a starter home just a couple years ago. People today expect EVERYTHING and don't feel they need to pay for it, or pay their dues by living WITHIN THEIR MEANS. When you start out, you buy small (like a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house) and WORK and SAVE and FIX IT UP YOURSELF so you can build equity and then move up. It's not rocket science, but when you have generations of ENTITLED BRATS who want that mansion right out of high school without paying their dues or actually WORKING for it, then you get garbage like this post.

Correct. People don't understand that starter homes used to be tiny. Today's starter homes could hold two to four of what was once the standard.
i live in a starter home built in 1950. it is 800 sq ft. but those of that time knew what mattered. it has a spacious detached garage and the lot is huge.
That's about the size my wife grew up in. Slightly smaller than I grew up in.
They were much simpler in construction too, compared to today.
All of which drives costs up.
My dad had nearly the same size at 795sq feet, but the 7 (!) kids managed just fine!

Thats not how wages or fucking prices work. Prices go up because people are willing to pay it. Wages go up because people aren't willing to work for them. If you think minimum wages should go up I will be happy to tell you why that is stupid and counter productive.

Funny, housing isn't optional and is driven by credit availability which has increased relative to income as interest rates have fallen 3% in the last 20 years. Immigration and divorces drive up demand for housing, especially 2 homes for every joint custody child.

While you're not completely wrong. You have to understand that times change, standards change, what required a large labor force 60 yrs ago is now mostly automated by machines. The argument you're making is akin to what I've heard from others. Which to paraphrase is that because we have smartphones and MRI machines,... when 60 yrs ago they had to wash laundry by hands and use real ice to cool fridges... therefore it's acceptable for the government to censor free speech and pervert the rule of law. The technological advances by a society should have no direct impact on the levels of freedom guaranteed to its citizens.

I think you're making a strawman argument. Nobody is really arguing over homes today not having enough wet bars, swimming pools or tesla charging stations. It's about the amount of time and work it takes today versus then to live a modest lifestyle as a family of 4 in a stable home with a stable job, and overall peace of mind while taking vacations and spending time with family. Not only is that harder today, its literally impossible for a disturbingly large number of people. The social contract has been broken but that doesn't scare me so much as the fact that nobody else seems to have noticed nor the implications.
Though to be fair many people could improve their lot in life simply by adopting better financial practices. Start saving money, you don't need a new smart phone, or large TV. You can never escape the cycle of abject poverty until you first learn to live within your means and build a savings.
