Lots of young Australians go/went to England for college and joined those societies. Obviously they were from rich families to have the means to go overseas to finish studies, but they were selected in college and went on to leadership positions in politics.
I used to reference the Aus Fabians wiki page, but it has been edited to hide how many Fabians became Prime Ministers and cabinet ministers in Aus politics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Fabian_Society
