That is a fair assessment, and my title was a bit click-baity.
But I don't think Latin would be an apt analogy; even though it was mostly dead in the lingual sense after the fall of the Roman Empire, it developed and merged with all of the living Romance languages, and was used as Lingua Franca by the pretentious elite.
I feel like Modern Hebrew is more like if I took Beowulf, the first known epic poem written in English, and tried use that text to invent modern English.
