The only thing I can think of is they have succeeded in convincing idiots that they have to go to a big name college away from family. Add in parents think their job is done at 18/high school graduation, and this is the result.

Alternate scenario is Little Suzy applies for dream college (follow your dreams!), located in another state, gets accepted and moved in by parents on massive trip across at least one state border. Little Suzy is then on her own, and left to defend her upbringing against "peers" she's trying to get along with. Said "peers" get her to realize she's in charge of her life and not her parents (she's not a "child" anymore after all). At that point, it is Pleasure Island from Pinocchio and the rot/character-cancer takes hold and runs rampant.

Really makes you wonder what sort of trauma they're able to get away with and call it education.

I recall reading a report that detailed the amount of hormone disrupting chemicals laced in the dorms of major universities.

I did a quick search trying to find ... and ...

I was in the construction business at the time and thought that there would be a lot of student dorm renovations coming down the line because of the toxic environment. A deeper dive really indicated that it was more or less intentional.
