Library of Congress In the United States, debtors' prisons were banned under federal law in 1833. A century and a half later, in 1983, the Supreme Court affirmed that incarcerating indigent debtors was unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection clause.

Never understood how child support enforcement gets around this.

'Sherrill's father, Joe Sherrill of Parkton, said he had made arrangements to pay the child support while his son was held hostage.

``We thought that we had paid it up, to be honest with you,' Sherrill said Friday.

He said the payment was missed a couple of months, but he thought he had been able to catch up with an $1,800 payment in November and a $600 payment this month.'

His Father didnt pay his alimony while he was overseas - then couldn't be fcked to go through the receipts to work out how much was still actually owing.
