My son wouldn't breast feed, we tried to get him to but he just wouldn't have it. So.... My missus expressed milk into bottles and he drank breast milk from bottles. Never gave him formula.
People are far too willing to use formula these days. It's not what babies are supposed to drink. They are supposed to drink breast milk.

There are legitimate issues on the mother's side and the child's side that are very rare. Your wife did the right thing, even though it was inconvenient. My wife has been able to breastfeed all six children she has birthed exclusively for no less than 6 months each and I know that is also rare.
