People are also under the misconception that learning requires sitting in a desk, staring blankly at the front, and repeatedly solving inane problems.
Public school is where they make living zombies.
Modern American public schooling isn't about learning to solve problems or learning to think. It is, and has been for quite some time now, about teaching automatons to repeat after the authority figure and believe whatever your told. It's a rare student, in my opinion, that breaks away from that mold.
I used to piss my math teacher off all the time. She would say I need to know how to do this equation to pass and I'd always ask, "ok, but where is it used in real life?". Never got an answer.
