The AR was designed to be used by an educated first world soldier who has strong logistical support. One must use the proper ammo loaded with the proper propellent. It must be cleaned with the proper solvent and lubed with the proper lubricant. The AK, on the other hand, was built for use by an uneducated peasant with little to no logistical support. You can clean an AK with gasoline if that's all you have. As far as lube, I haven't tried it but I believe an AK would run for a while, at least, on bacon grease, if that's all I had. I lube mine with wheel bearing grease. When the balloon goes up whatever ammo you have on hand is probably all you will ever have, if you can hold on to it. I'm also confident that an AK would cycle ammo loaded with black powder, if that's all you had as well. I know my way around an M16. It was part of my life for eight years. Part of my duties as a US Marine was as a marksmanship coach and instructor. As far as ammo, what you have when the balloon goes up is probably all you will ever have and everyone who knows you have it is going to want it.

I’ve tried it on an AR. In fact I’ve experimented with bacon grease, coconut oil, and olive oil. Olive oil not so good, it burns off too quickly. Bacon grease and coconut oil are ok, but they will freeze if the temps get too low and can cause your BCG to seize.
In fact I now use coconut oil to clean all of my firearms. There are no fumes to give you a headache, and the wife doesn’t complain about the smell. Then wipe clean and lube with a little motor oil and you’re good to go.
