Some people don't like stuffing plugs in their ears. There's also nice noise cancelling headphones and hearing protection now. Expensive, but nice. And other earmuffs have speakers and multiple external mikes for communication, too. Idk if they will accurately let the user know which direction a sound came from. Never tried those kinds, myself. I'll use the earmuffs for double hearing protection. Plugs and earmuffs make a nice team.
I fall into that camp. Can't abide things stuffed in my canals. We use the Walker Razor active ear muffs with the upgraded pads. Fosters communication on the range and allows greater auditory situational awareness in the field.
I got a box of 80 earplugs that if you put them in right you can stand behind a jet engine and it'll sound like a whisper. I don't shoot as much these days but I do fly every now and then and putting these bad boys in I can't hear anything, it's awesome.
A entry level set of noise-cancelling muffs will cost you about $60. I have a set and rarely use them tbh, I usually just use foam earllugs.
