Yes, it's way too early for negotiations. Every compromize must get sold to the own people. Westerners are being told that the Russians run out of material and soldiers - impossible to tell them now that the eastern and southern parts of the Ukraine become Russian. And Russia must get Odessa first before they can start to negotiate about the rest of the country.
