FLINT, MI -- A U.S. postal worker has been charged by the Genesee County prosecutor in connection to an assault outside a Flint apartment complex that went viral through a video on social media.

Flint police were dispatched at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, to the area of Carson Street and Floyd McCree Drive near the Schafer Square Apartments for a report of a hit and run personal injury incident.

Officers found a U.S. Postal Service mail truck with front-end damage and spoke with the 29-year-old driver of the truck, a Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office news release states.

Upon completion of the police investigation, Prosecutor David Leyton authorized charges against the mail carrier for lying to a peace officer, a 2-year misdemeanor, and assault and battery, a 93-day misdemeanor.

The postal worker, whose name has not been released, will be arraigned in Genesee District Court in Flint.

“This is a perfect example of how a situation may not be exactly what it looks like at first glance,” Prosecutor David Leyton said after announcing the charges.

According to the police investigation, the postal worker initially stated that her mail truck was hit by another vehicle and then the driver and passenger got out of their vehicle and began assaulting her.

However, Leyton told MLive-The Flint Journal the investigation revealed the postal worker actually hit the other vehicle with her mail truck. The worker was also the first to throw a punch, he said.

Police observed that the worker had two black eyes and multiple red scratches and abrasions around her neck and face.

A video recorded on a phone by a witness was later posted to social media and showed the postal worker and two women in their early 20s fighting in the street.

“A lot of people were immediately calling for charges against the two young women involved when, in fact, according to the police investigation, they were the victims,” Leyton said.

No charges will be filed against the other two women, he said.

Law enforcement officials were able to identify the two women involved and conducted an investigation including interviews with the subjects involved and other witnesses.

“As Prosecutor, it is my responsibility to carefully review the evidence, determine the facts as best I can, and apply the law fairly in the best interests of justice,” Leyton said. “Jumping to conclusions and quick, rash judgments about a situation rarely serves justice well.”

The U.S. Postal Inspector sent MLive/The Flint Journal the following statement:

“In order to preserve the integrity of our investigations and to prevent fundamental unfairness to the subjects of those investigations, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service does not confirm, deny, or otherwise comment on the existence of its ongoing investigations.”
