It is a standard theatrical element. You go through the portal tied to a rope so we can pull you back through. But when we pull the rope out of the portal you are gone and the camera zooms in on the broken end of the "smoking rope" making your situation on the other side appear hopeless.
The rope should be smoldering a bit at the end when the camera zooms in.
