This is a super key mod to do. I have two 1541s on a stack both have picoPSU replacements with a custom dongle so they run off a single power brick. Temperature before with 70F ambient was 127F coming out of the top drive, afterwards it is 72F. Another thing I have noticed is the two chips that fail all the time are the basic and dos roms, they are the two 24 pin ICs at the back of the drive that just happen to be sitting directly over the power transformer. I have 6 drives that are all fixed up but I don't have spare dos/basic roms due to the failure rate.
The other aspect of a cool drive he doesn't go into is that floppy disks don't last long when they get heated and cooled over and over.
