I actually beat that game on NES. Waaay too much time invested.

The Nes version is POR light, they didn't have enough space to fit it on a cartridge so the game is chopped way down. The c64/amiga/pc version is a real fucking slog.

Good game. I played them all back in the day. Pool Of Radiance, Curse Of Asure Bonds, Hillsfar.

On the original C64 platform you could transfer the characters from one game to the other. None of the emulators I have tried can pull that off.

For C64 you can do it with VICE you just have to create a save disk and use that the whole way through. Currently playing through on c64 again with this easflash version (on real hardware), makes it amazing! no disk swapping and you can save to the easyflash direct, you only need a disk for character creation and transferring characters. Also next to no load times. I slogged through POR with a stock 1541 back in the day and it took about a year and a half. Even with Jiffydos roms installed the disk swapping is out of hand.

Can I play this as is on my desktop or do I need an emulator like retroarch?

You just need Vice emulator(vice-emu.sourceforge.io) and the manual.(goldbox.fandom.com)
