Why are you pulling chips from dead boards?

For backups. And by dead boards I mean boards that are cracked or repair would take 30+ hours. I actually have some boards that people for whatever reason took a skill saw and carved pieces out off and what looks like got hit with a hammer. I just pull all the chips and thermal epoxy on a heat sink, put them in anti-static foam, anti-static bags and then in a pill bottle.

edit: I also label the bottom of the chip with the chip number and date code. Because.

Ah well it’s good to have backup chips

They are getting scarce especially after they came out with those in the early oughts. People would just grab a board and pull the SID and chuck the rest. There are modern replacements for the PLA (primary logic array) and 7502s and some SID knockoffs but for the rest the only option is an original.

edit: added link to those evil SID sound cards.
